L' Escalinada
22 Rue Pairoliere

This is a charming little restaurant located on the far end of the famous winding that runs just inside the old city. the street is packed with small clothing, food shops and ornamental stands. Yet here is also where you find some of the best butchers, pasta and cheese shops. L'scalinada may have a touristy look from the outside but you will find an abundance of locals among the tourists. And, during the busy season or on weekends we suggest a reservation.

The restaurant serves excellent local cooking with a very attentive and polite staff. The restaurant has a charming annex right next door, so if as usual it looks filled up just walk a few feet up to the right.

The Menu's (above) are clearly visible from outside the restaurant. Local dishes are the specialty here and they are wonderfully prepared.

Be sure to try the Merde du Can, a light gnochi made with swiss chard and served with a beef sauce...

We have had several visits to L'Escalinada and enjoyed them all. We do however suggest you stick to just the local dishes, which are excellently prepared here; be sure to try the Merde du Can (litterly translated ast Dog S---. It's is a gnochii made with swiss chard and servered with a meat sauce. The gnocci is very soft and light; other version we have tried in Nice were found to be a bit heavy. Another wonderful dish was the Tripe Nicois; the dish was served with the Parmesian on the side unlike the versions found in Florence where the cheese is mixed in ahead of time. Both of these dishes were rather large and we recommend splitting each dish.
