Atoms -- Elements -- Molecules -- Compounds

The following activities target a middle school population although activities are approachable by more advanced elementary school students. The activities are also ideal for high school students to review basic concepts.

All exercises make use of javascript's which provides for a more interactive environment.

ATOMS -- Learn the basics of atomic structure and how to create a model of an atom.

WHAT ARE ATOMIC ORBITALS? -- What are atomic orbitals... 3D interactive images of atomic orbitals using Jmol.

ELEMENTS -- What are elements? About the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements.

COMPOUNDS AND MOLECULES -- What is a compound? What is a molecules? Examples of compounds. 3-D structure of molecules.

STATES OF MATTER -- An interactive activity about the states of matter: solid, liquid gas, plasma... and now Bose Einstein?

CARBON COMPOUNDS  -- Learn about the 3 types of carbon: diamonds, graphite and fullerenes. Learn why carbon is is the building block to molecules of life.

CHEMICAL BOND--IONIC BOND -- AND COVALENT COMPOUNDS -- Learn the basics of chemical bonding. -- ionic and covalent bonding....

CHEMICAL FORMULA -- What is a chemical formula?

EXPLAIN IT WITH MOLECULES  -- Why does ice float?-- How does soap work? -- Why is diamond so hard?-- Why do carcinogens like nicotine cause cancer? -- Why is a salt crystal cubic in shape? -- This is an interactive activity using Jsmol (using HTML5) which allows students to interact with molecules. No plug-in is needed.
